An officer from the Scarsdale Police Department on DWI traffic enforcement at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Saturday morning stopped 21-year-old Ramiro Escobar-Vega near Post Road after spotting him make a turn onto Mamaroneck Road before stopping at Cooper Road, at which point a passenger exited the vehicle and began to run away.
The officer was able to stop the passenger, who was ordered to return to the vehicle, and when speaking with Escobar-Vega, the driver, who stated he had one beer at a bar in White Plains earlier, it was reported that he had the odor of alcohol on his breath. He proceeded to fail multiple Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and police determined he had a blood-alcohol content of .10 percent.
Escobar-Vega was arrested at the scene and charged with misdemeanor counts of driving while intoxicated, operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent and unauthorized use of a vehicle, because police could not locate the owner of the Honda he was driving.
Following processing at Scarsdale Police Headquarters, officers were in the process of releasing Escobar-Vega on his own recognizance when they were contacted by a sergeant from the Stamford Police Department, who alerted investigators that the vehicle Escobar-Vega was busted in had been reported stolen. At that time, Escobar-Vega was placed back in the holding cell and additional charges were levied against him, including a felony count of criminal possession of stolen property.
After the additional charges, Escobar-Vega was remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail. He is due back in Scarsdale Village Court on March 14 to answer the charges.
